Issue 23: Kristi - Miss Goodwill 2021

“If they cannot learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn”. With nearly 1 in 59 children receiving the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acceptance and Awareness are important to providing a safe inclusive environment for many. For this future Social Worker and Miss Goodwill 2021, Kristi’s REAL WHY is Autism Awareness and the Best Buddies Canada organization.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, 2013), Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental difference; which is often showcased through difficulties with social communication/interaction and repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. Symptoms are typically recognized between the ages of one and two.

Through organizations such as Best Buddies Canada, we are one step closer to creating an inclusive environment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Best Buddies Canada is an organization dedicated to enhancing communities through friendships between individuals with intellectual disabilities and students/volunteers. Best Buddies believes in fostering friendships is important to the development of all individuals regardless of diagnosis.

Kristi was first introduced to Best Buddies during their Annual Friendship Ball, a celebration of their programs and success throughout the year. Kristi instantly fell in love with the inclusive environment and the love/support amongst the participants. She enjoyed the experience so much, the following year she joined the organization as a ‘buddy’. Through this experience, Kristi was matched with her very own buddy who was diagnosed with Autism. Kristi’s buddy did not allow Autism to define her and inspired Kristi with every interaction. Presently, Kristi is ecstatic to call her buddy her best friend.

With Kristi’s pageant platform and future career as a social worker, she aims to show the world just how beautiful and intelligent those with disabilities are. Through her experience, Kristi has witnessed the impact those with disabilities have on our communities; through bringing joy to the world through their passion and empathy. Through her platform, she continuously ‘Spreads the word to end the word’ bringing awareness to end the use of the “R” word. As this word is debilitating, hurtful, and daunting to individuals with disabilities.

As a Master of Social Work Candidate, Kristi aims to continue to raise awareness towards disability inclusion; aspiring to pursue a career working with individuals with disabilities.
