What Our Children Need – Robin Lea Black

They need us to CHERISH every minute with them, for tomorrow may be too late.

They need us to HUG them, so they know they are important to us.

They need us to show INTEREST in what they do, all they want is approval.

They need us to LISTEN to what they say, remembering they are our future.

They need us to DREAM with them, because this is how they find where they want to be in life.

They need us to RESPECT them because this is how they learn to care about others.

They need us to ENCOURAGE them. Because this is how they become the best that they can.

They need us to NURTURE them because the world can be a harsh place.

AND WE ARE THEIR SHELTER FROM HARM!

With more than 400,000 children in the care of the child welfare system in the United States, USA Ambassador Ms. 2021 Jamerika took her life’s experiences to create her platform ‘A Chance to Succeed: Empowering Youth in Foster Care’. After spending thirteen years of her life in the child welfare system, Jamerika knew her REAL WHY was to ensure children, youth, and their families involved within the system have their basic needs and supports met. Becoming an advocate for foster care youth became Jamerika’s life’s mission to empower youth to accomplish their own aspirations; hence, the development of her platform ‘A Chance to Succeed: Empowering Youth in Foster Care’.

No family expects the rock bottom of their life to fall out of the expected. Through Jamerika’s platform she is able to provide families with the resources and supports within their own communities; to allow these families to thrive despite their circumstance. Jamerika emphasizes the importance of neighbours and communities coming together to build connections; to ensure in times of crisis, families have a protective barrier to rely on for support.
